The first time I saw a hand knit bag that my sister had, I wanted her
to make one for me. She in turn said that she would give me the pattern
and help me through it, instead of making one for me. This was the case
when she taught me how to knit as well. I was expecting my son and she
had already knit a bunch of baby sweaters for her kids and I wanted her
to make one for my son. She thought it would be better to teach me how
to knit, then to make it herself.
I have to admit, the first thing that I made was a baby blanket for my
son that I had started when I was 4 months pregnant, and didn't finish
until he was 5 months old. At first I didn't really enjoy knitting, I
just thought that I had to finish the blanket because I had already purchased
the materials and I was obligated to do so.
Needless to say, once the blanket was finished, it did not look nearly
as nice as I had pictured it in my head, and I was disappointed with it.
I did not pick up the needles again until late that summer when my cousin
and I were in Michigan and came across a great knitting store. We discovered
all of the fun and novelty yarns, but we were not sure what exactly to
make with them. We ended up purchasing some yarns, because we could not
resist it, and went home to make a bunch of belts and scarves.
It was when I saw the purse my sister was using that I knew what all of
the fun and novelty yarns could be used for. After I made a few of the
purses, friends would ask me to make one for them, and the word spread
and I had more requests for purses and bags.
In January of 2005 I decided to try my hand at local art shows and see
how the bags would be received. This is when Tiffin Bags was "born."
After several successful art shows, I decided to try my luck with this
web site.
All of the bags and other little extras are hand knit and then felted,
unless stated other wise, in my home when I can get some "knitting
time" in, which can be difficult with a 3 year old son running around!
Enjoy the web site and please email me Sheila@tiffinbags.com
